Margaret Dawes-Smith OAM

A long-term member of the Club since 1972, and of the Touring & Social Sub-Club, Margaret passed away on 22 March 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

Married to David (dec’d), she had a distinguished career in education, having received a number of state and community awards for her leadership and dedication, culminating in being awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2002 for services to education and the community.

Margaret initially taught gifted and talented students at Summer Hill Primary School before becoming Principal of Greenwich Primary School. She was also a Life Member (over 55 years) of the Royal Automobile Club of Australia and President of the Ladies Committee for most of that time until her passing.

A gifted educator, mentor, leader and friend, she endeared herself to many who will mourn her passing.

Bill who passed away on 30 March 2024, had a distinguished medical and military career and was a good friend to those who had the pleasure to know him.

He was a respected former Macquarie Street Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical Superintendent St. Margaret’s Hospital Darlinghurst, then VMP in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at St. Vincents Pte, Prince of Wales Pte and Mater Misericordiac Pte Hospitals until retirement.

Commissioned as an Infantry Officer (CMF) in 1957, he served with SUR, than as a Staff Officer in HQ 1 Div and later, with The Queens Royal Rifles (Territorial Army) whilst undergoing further medical study in the UK, then with the USAR HQ187 Inf Bde in Boston USA whilst undertaking further medical studies in the USA. On returning to Australia, Bill served as 2IC OCTU then SI CSTU and later, as the CO UNSWR in 1975 followed by several senior Staff Postings. Transferring in 1988 to the Medical corps as SO1 Medical services HQ 2Div, then on promotion to Colonel in 1989 as Commander Div Med Svcs, then finally, as Director Medical Services, Eastern region at Vic Bks until 1992. In 1998 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the RAAMC until 2002.

In civil life, he was promoted ‘Commander in the Military & Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem’ in 2007. He joined the NSW Masonic Club in 2009 and was a Member of the Masonic RSL Sub- Branch and of the Sydney Birthday Club.

Bill passed away on his 56th Wedding Anniversary, his wife Giovanna predeceasing him five days earlier.

As many who knew Bill, it was a fitting last line in his SMH Death Notice that stated, ‘Please raise your Glass in honour of the Colonel’.
